Armed with the DNA results and geographical distribution patterns, Ian Darbyshire in 2006 collapsed the number of African violet species to just 6 Saintpaulia species, (S. goetzeana, S. inconspicua, S. ionanthaS. pusilla, S. shumensis,  and S. teitensis).  However, recognizing the long time tradition of additional species under Burtt’s classification, Darbyshire conserved ten of the other former species names as subspecies or varieties under S. ionantha.

As it was the genus name used at the time of publication, all abbreviated genus references here should be understood as Saintpaulia.
