This species appears very different than what has historically been understood as typical Chrysothemis species, with white flowers and without prominent calyces. On the basis of a number of morphological characters (including terrestrial habit, occasional presence of tubers, etc), but not phylogenetic analysis, it was moved from Nautilocalyx to Chrysothemis by Mora and Clark (2016).
