Columnea ‘Early Bird’ has become one of the “standard” gesneriad hybrids. Created in the 1970s by Lyndon Lyon, it has proven to be vigorous, hardy and floriferous, as well as very decorative.

Like most Columneas, ‘Early Bird’ likes bright indirect light and moderate temperatures. It thrives in a potting medium that is open and porous, and that is kept evenly moist, or perhaps on the dry side. ‘Early Bird’ tolerates drought, but cannot survive in a heavy, perpetually wet, medium.

A portrait of a whole plant shows the vigorous and floriferous nature of this reliable cultivar.
