Gesneria celsioides was considered by Skog (1976, A study of the tribe Gesnerieae with a revision of Gesneria) as a synonym of Gesneria humilis. More recent work by Clark et al., (2019, Gesneriaceae treatment for the Flora de la República de Cuba) recognize Gesneria celsioides as a separate species.
