M. coccinea has bright red flowers and shiny green foliage, and is hardy in moderately temperate conditions, tolerating a few degrees of frost on occasion. A close-up of the flower may be seen by clicking here.

The ‘Lake Caburgua’ collection has larger and somewhat darker flowers and foliage than the standard species. It was collected and introduced from Chile by Michael Wickenden of Cally Gardens in Scotland.
