Sphaerorrhiza sarmentiana was previously known as Gloxinia attenuata (G. Gardner 1839), Gloxinia sarmentiana (Gardner 1841), and Gloxinia stolonifera A.F.M. Glaziou 1883). It is the largest species of the genus and bears leaves and large purple flowers along the stem. It is also the most widespread species of the genus.
