This species has an unusual distribution, occurring well north of the main group of acaulescent species, which is in South Africa. S. goetzei has been collected in Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania; this particular specimen is from seed originating in Malawi. Note the abscission zone characteristic of most unifoliate species — portions of the single leaf die back seasonally, in response to drought or other conditions.
